Having goals in life is easily one of the best things that a person can do for themselves. Not everyone is goal-oriented, but even so there are things that people work toward everyday, whether they realize it or not. But it’s when you start to rely solely on achieving your goals for happiness that this process becomes a problem. If you find yourself measuring your worth or happiness in terms of how often you achieve, you might want to change this habit, because it’s likely making you unhappy.
Achievements should be valued, but here are five things that happen when you stop relying on them to make you happy:
You lose your ego – Your ego plays a large part in how you’re feeling in your day-to-day routine. Sadness, anger, and fear all stem from the ego, and it is through the ego that we define ourselves. Whenever that definition is threatened or challenged, it makes us uneasy. Holding onto these feelings can be damaging, especially when these feelings are held with regard to another person. Having no ego allows for less resistance to external circumstances.
You become fearless – Being completely relaxed means that your happiness isn’t dependant on any certain outcome. You achieve this when your happiness no longer depends on whether or not you’re making more money, part of a successful relationship, or doing well in business. Pursuing these goals are good, but don’t let your happiness suffer due to shortcomings. Dependency on specific outcomes leads to unhealthy obsessions, which leads to fear of not being able to achieve these outcomes. When you no longer rely on achievement, you lose any fear of falling short, which empowers you.
You don’t regret anything – There are no mistakes in life, only lessons. If you regard everything that happens in life as a learning experience, then everything that happens on your journey is but one step of many to come. Whether an experience is good or bad, it is another step toward the next chapter in life. When you are no longer fearful and regard nothing as a mistake, you have no regrets, because everything that happens in life is simply your growing as a person.
You are honest – When ego falls away, your reasons for lying, manipulating, and bending the truth all disappear. You are always relaxed and are confident in your ability to not only accept how things are, but to tell others how it is. When we’re not honest with one another it’s typically because we’re afraid of something. Once you’ve become fearless, you’ve no reason to lie.
You be yourself – Being yourself is one of the most important parts of being human. Each person on Earth has multitudes of complexities and nuances that make them unique. When you’re not being yourself, you cover up all of the beauty that is ‘you’. Never be afraid that other people won’t like you; speak your mind and be true to yourself, because people can pick up on fakeness and insincerity. Be the real, interesting, intelligent, thoughtful, and dynamic person that you are, and others will love you for it.
